The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the world’s largest biomedical research institute. However, many innovators primarily think of NIH in terms of grant funding. In reality, there is much more that NIH can offer to innovators, much of which is not immediately apparent.
In this program, leaders from NIH will discuss the key elements of its mission to facilitate economic development. NIH has established itself as a leading partner for the healthcare industry, offering opportunities for collaboration with thought leaders, overcoming technology or knowledge gaps, and bringing new life sciences products to market. Across its 27 Institutes and Centers, NIH covers nearly every disease and disorder imaginable—and marketable—and is the largest provider of in-kind support in the world.
In addition to providing research tools at little or no cost, NIH is competitive in the business and financial realm, particularly in areas such as equity, royalty costs, and overhead rates. To fulfill its mission of accelerating and promoting economic development, NIH works with companies to enhance their chances of attracting equity investment, becoming merger and acquisition targets, and growing as active employers. NIH may not be the first place you think of to bolster your pipeline or solve a development challenge—but perhaps it should be.
